Mother, My Shelter

U birthed

Kings, Queens

And kept it moving

All by ur lonesome.

And I’m still amazed…

How is it that momma

Through her own sufferings

Her own trials

Was able to take four children,

Instill virtue,

Cover them with clothing, shelter,

Listen to their cries

And in between her own cries

Find the time

to not show them teary eyes?

Where was ur cry

Where were ur screams

Where was ur despair?

I don’t remember hearing u in agony

I don’t remember u being desperate

I don’t remember u being unable…

All I remember is that we were all fed

.    not lacking anything of importance

…for when Nike couldn’t do it, you did

And even though I didn’t wear my payless with pride

I had comfort in your shelter.
